Muncie Civic Theatre is proud to present the Barrier-Free Theatre performance on mainstate, May 11, 12 & 13 at 7:30pm. This is an original story/musical created by the performers through sessions with Therapeutic Arts Director Tracena Marie.

Tickets are $8. General Admission.

Muncie Civic Theatre is excited to offer the inaugural Barrier-Free Theatre program, providing developmental care through performing arts. Barrier-Free Theatre is a therapeutic arts program, servicing adults with developmental and physical disabilities, by way of the performing arts. The program provides tools to participants developing a play, rehearsing the play, and performing the original production at Muncie Civic Theatre.

Our Therapeutic Arts Director, Tracena Marie, works directly with the participants and volunteers in order to provide a safe, fun, and creative environment. She mentors and assists the participants as they create an original script, which will be performed at Muncie Civic Theatre, May 8th & 9th. A total of 16 sessions will be conducted in the September to December 2014 months which will focus on building group cohesion, trust, creativity, self-esteem, and creating ideas for the original play. Over the winter break, the Barrier-Free Director will write and finalize the script. Another 16 sessions will take place in the January to April 2015 months where the participants will rehearse the script in preparation for the performance in the spring. Each of the 32 sessions meets weekly for a two-hour period during the day.

This is the first program of its kind in Indiana and if successful will grow to allow for 40 participants per session and will continue annually.

The demographic benefiting from this programming will be adults ages 17 & up who are on the spectrum of either developmental or physical disability. The impact expands further to all the volunteers, families of those involved, and community members.

Objectives for this program for participants and volunteers include breaking down the stigma of disabilities in the community, enhancing emotional and cognitive growth or participants, providing an opportunity for individuals to enhance creativity, boost self-esteem, validate talent, establish life skills, as well as create friendships.

This program is offered at no charge to participants by Muncie Civic Theatre, made possible in part by the Psi Iota Xi – Alpha Chapter Endowment Fund.
